The "Journey" behind this popular print.

The "Journey" behind this popular print.

"Journey," the second piece in my 2020 self-reflection series, began its life as a doodle from an old sketchbook

My artistic approach has always been rooted in a love for vibrant colors, layering, and the discovery of new paint products, often on recycled canvases. The foundation of this piece was a canvas with a forgotten painting underneath.

The energetic, colorful background was a direct result of a graffiti class I was taking in Washington, D.C., influencing the piece with a raw, urban feel. To ensure the outcome was just right, I created two smaller versions while experimenting with materials, a critical step in bringing the simple sketch to life in a way that was as bold as its background.

Bringing the doodle to the main canvas required a bold simplification, with the eyes becoming the most significant transformation. My mind was captivated by the works of Henri Matisse, Kandinsky, and Picasso's later period. The eyes were intentionally crafted to allow the viewer to perceive the subject as looking both forward and to the right, depending on their perspective—a visual metaphor for the journey of self-reflection.

This piece was a personal odyssey, harmonizing an old concept with new artistic methods. The original is sold, white frame above, but its popularity later inspired me to create prints, including a limited run of three hand-embellished editions in gold frames, allowing the journey to continue beyond the original canvas.
